What is the Advice Service?
The aim of the MMD Reading Service is to provide professional level feedback to any writers who need it.
Do you need advice from someone with a little more experience than you? Do you need to know what you're good at? Or are you starting to professionalise and need to know more about the business?
With our service, you can spend an hour with an advisor, either in person or on the phone, who can listen to samples of your work, ascertain what you are trying to achieve and help you identify some immediate practical next steps, whether that's things to improve in your writing, people to contact, or pointing you at the most useful backstage resources offered by MMD. Your advisor will be carefully chosen to be someone who is just a few steps ahead of you in the development process, and who therefore really knows the territory you are about to, or are trying to get into.
This is a rare chance to get wholly personalised, confidential advice through MMD from someone who is prepared to be objective.
What advice will I get?
You could use an advice session to help you work out:
- how your work comes across
- which areas of your musical theatre craft are strengths and which need further development
- whether you should be specialising/seeking a collaborator
- whether your ideas have an obvious established audience, or whether you would need to build one
- which MMD and other opportunites are the best for you to pursue now
- which topics you are naturally drawn to as a writer
- business knowledge, e.g. around rights, collaboration agreements, options etc.
- your immediate next step
What can I expect?
What you CAN expect From your advisor:
- A listen of your existing material (please bring ipod or some other way to listen!)
- At least one suggested, practical next step that's appropriate to where you are in your development
- A respectful and professional tone
What you CANNOT expect from your advisor:
- Detailed technical advice on areas that lie outside their particular area of expertise.
- Specific names of people you should approach, or contact-making.
-
