Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer – CURVE Leicester Composer Brief

Seeking a musical theatre composer for the next Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer placement at CURVE Leicester.

Please note: Applications for this placement closed on Tuesday 2nd May 2017. Future placements will be announced in due course.

The Cameron Mackintosh Foundation generously funds Mercury Musical Developments and Musical Theatre Network to place five musical theatre composers in producing theatres around the country over 2015-18, each for a six month resident composer placement.

We are thrilled that the next placement will take place at Curve Leicester. The placement will begin in October 2017. The fee is calculated to cover 6 months of your time. The exact timetable and the projects to be worked on will be agreed in consultation between the selected composer and the venue’s artistic planning team, but it’s expected the successful applicant would be based in Leicester for a significant portion of the six months.

Key opportunities are likely to include:

Creating incidental music for the children’s Christmas production ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ in the 300 seat space.

Assisting the Composer, and also Orchestrator Sarah Travis, on the Christmas musical production ‘Scrooge’ in the 900 seat space.

Assisting within the development process for a major new musical currently in development at Curve.

Period of R&D on own musical theatre work.

Pitching a project to the Artistic Director / programming team.

Composing incidental music for a production in early 2018.

The successful applicant will receive an all-inclusive fee of £11,000.

To be eligible to apply: you must be a composer who has already had at least one professionally produced musical theatre show (which can include paid work for a drama college or other training institute) – along with other work. Ideally the successful applicant will be based in Leicester for the duration of the placement period, although there is some flexibility. Applicants must be resident in the UK to be eligible. We encourage applicants from the broadest diversity of cultural heritages.

Overall, the applicant will need to be self-sufficient, adaptable, and able to take the initiative to make the most of working within a large staff in a busy producing theatre.
