The Umbrella Rooms
Calling all MMD members! Stiles + Drewe would love you to join them for the second Progress Lab for Reanimator – A Zombie Musical, winner of the 2017 MTI Stiles + Drewe Mentorship Award.
Launched in 2016, the MTI Stiles + Drewe Mentorship Award is a fully funded award given to a writer or writing team, centred around a one week writing retreat and culminating in an industry showcase presentation the following year. The Award is generously supported by Music Theatre International (Europe).
Reanimator: A Zombie Musical is a new musical by Ben Glasstone (Book, Music & Lyrics) and Susanna Kleeman (Book). The Director is Adam Lenson. Inspired by an H. P. Lovecraft story, it’s a rollicking take on modern zombies.
Big-hearted, over-talkative Harriet works hard to fit in with her more worldly-wise and cynical peers at medical school. But despite her best efforts to suppress her eccentricities and keep the right company she finds herself drawn into the ghoulish and high-tech project of mysterious fellow-student Annie. And when Harriet helps Annie achieve her dreams, a deadly plan spins out of control.
Told with zip, vim and blood, Reanimator: A Zombie Musical takes a sharp look at what zombiedom means today. Who is really alive or dead as we stumble about with our phones, who and what are the monsters we must confront – and just what needs to be reanimated in us to fit us for the struggle?
Progress Lab Structure
Following a successful writers’ retreat in late August, and Progress Lab One in December 2017, the Reanimator: A Zombie Musical team will share recently reworked as well as new material from Act 1 approximately 25 minutes in length. The cast and creative team will work on this material in a rehearsal before the Progress Lab commences at 4pm. After the presentation, there will be a panel-led discussion with the writers and MMD members (Mercury Musical Developments), giving an opportunity to re-sing and re-read sections, and respond to suggestions or tackle issues the
writers have encountered. Three other industry experts will join Stiles + Drewe. Previous panellists have included Jeremy Sams (Director), Eliza Lumley (Creative Director for Theatre at Universal Music), Paul Hart (Artistic Director, The Watermill Theatre), Vicky Graham and Nicola Seed (Producers), Adam Cork (composer, London Road), Cathy Jayes (Musical Director).
The musical theatre industry is generous by nature, and peer-to-peer suggestions and support will be invaluable to Ben and Susanna. As founding board members of MMD, George and Anthony are very keen that Reanimator’s development process should be accessible to MMD members; to observe, to learn, and for this to then feed into their own writing. The hope is that MMD members will come on this journey with the Reanimator team!
Free to MMD members! Places are limited and should be booked on a first come first served basis on Eventbrite HERE
