BEAM 2020

BEAM: Shining a light on new British musical theatre.

The inaugral BEAM Showcase at Park Theatre, London in 2016 was described by a leading Artistic Director as “game-changing”. BEAM 2018 was a two-day event showcasing 58 contemporary British musical theatre pieces and their writers, and took place at Theatre Royal Stratford East in March 2018. By sponsoring BEAM 2020 your company will have the opportunity to reach many of the top industry decision makers in UK Theatre. For two days, key theatre figures will be gathered together for this unprecedented, industry-only event. You will also be supporting the artists who are shaping the future of British musical theatre.

What?

BEAM is a biennial two-day event, which will be held next in March 2020. In 5 years time we want new musical theatre appearing on UK stages to be able to trace its genesis back to the original BEAM in 2016. In order for the UK to remain a centre of excellent and innovative musical theatre we need to strategically support new writers, encourage industry collaboration and raise awareness of the breadth of work being created. BEAM is designed to do this. You can find out more about what happened at BEAM:2018 by clicking here.

The two days will consist of panel discussions, networking and the showcases themselves. We will be featuring new work by new and established msuical theatre writers via 10-minute ‘Lights Up’ pitches, 25-minute ‘Spotlight’ extracts and individual writer platforms, showcasing the range of their work. Delegate passes will be available to Venues, Producer, Artistic Directors, Literary Managers, Directors and those industry interested in supporting new musical theatre.

Who?

BEAM is a collaboration between the charity Mercury Musical Developments (MMD) and Musical Theatre Network (MTN) and is a key part of both organisations’ mission to support the development of new British musical theatre.

MTN’s membership is made up of leading venues and producers across the UK such as ATG, Curve Theatre, and the St James Theatre, London. MMD’s members and patrons include Judi Dench, Maria Friedman, Howard Goodall and Tim Rice. Our writer members encompass both those new to the genre as well as experienced practitioners such as Charles Hart and Don Black.

Our combined membership reaches all aspects, and the key players, of the musical theatre industry across the UK. By supporting BEAM 2020 you will get un-paralleled access to our contacts and networks.

Why?

BEAM 2016 and 2018 were unparalleled successes. Over two thirds of the work shown has been commissioned, produced or workshopped. Artistic Directors, Venues and Producers got to experience the incredible breadth of talent in the UK to a broader degree than ever before. In order to build upon the past success of BEAM, we need to raise £28,000 to fully pay all artists presenting at BEAM 2020 and to make sure we can broaden the reach of our pitching days.

MMD & MTN gratefully acknowledges support from PRS for Music Foundation towards the pitching days and the following organisations for their support of BEAM 2018:
