For the past eight years, composition has been one of my fundamental components to my lifestyle. My musical creativity can only be satisfied when I am writing music, although performance remains a strong element. I first began writing music for piano when exploring my skills as a pianist. The music was somewhat simple but effective on an audience. However over the years my style and musical experimentation has developed into my own “compositional stamp”. I cater for a range of compositional styles from Concert Music to Musical Theatre. When I was 14, I had the pleasure to attend a summer soundtrack film school at my local theatre. Film composer Bill Connor hosted this workshop. I attend the course four consecutive years. Each and every one taught me something new and exciting about writing for screen and the importance of improvisation and the relationship between music and screen. Since a teenager I have played in many ensembles on the Cello and Flute. I had the pleasure of being section leader for 3 of these ensembles. Playing within an ensemble has allowed me to explore the use of an ensemble and also orchestration skills. In 2008 the Warrington Youth Orchestra premiered one of my pieces and have now commissioned me to write them a concert piece for their 40th anniversary celebrations. Throughout this process my orchestration skills have developed rapidly.Even though I have a wide range of styles I can cater for, my strongest element of composition is Musical theatre. It is a strong belief of mine that musical theatre is one of the most expressive forms of telling a story through a fusion of mediums. I feel that a lot of mainstream musical do not offer justice to the genre and that there are a lot of unsung compositional heroes within musical theatre. I am highly inspired by Stephen Sondheim and his belief that you should write a musical for the musical and nothing else.I have written three musicals which are all still in development. “Schindler” has been my most successful project so far. It has been work-shopped in New York, reaching the Semi finals of Search For A Twitter Composer thus being performed at the Soho Theatre, London, and having its premiere at UCLan earlier this year. This piece has been a collaborative project and recently incorporated Caroline Clegg as the new Librettist. Another Musical of mine, “Dust of Man”, was first developed whilst working in America in 2012. The Piece explores the changes in New York City and society 10 years after the attacks on the world trade centre. And finally my most recent project, “Pandora”, Has just been performed at UCLan and is soon to undergo a transfer to Manchester. This piece has given me the opportunity to write an original musical and be at my most creative in terms of both narrative and musical composition.Earlier last year I was selected to attend Youth Music Theatre”s young composers course in Edinburgh where I had the opportunity to work alongside Composer Derek Barnes and Librettist Stephen Clark. Both of them had praise over my work and have highly recommended that I explore my compositional skills further by completing a Masters Degree. In April I also had the opportunity to go to New York City to attend the ASCAP workshop where I had the pleasure of watching Stephen Schwartz workshop new musicals in front of a live audience. This was a great networking opportunity and allowed me to get my work out into the industry. Since then I have had invaluable feedback that has allowed my craft to develop into what it is now.I have now finished my training at UCLan on the Music Theatre course and I am currently looking for funding to being my masters in Creating Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting.
