Biography | With composer Christopher Ash, Carl is currently writing book and lyrics for WASTED, and lyrics for THE H WORD (book by Carol Russell, produced by Julie Clare). Extracts from WASTED and THE H WORD were featured in BEAM 2016. Carl and Chris also wrote ‘Self Respect’ for MMD’s A Song Cycle for Soho. With composer Marc Folan, Carl is writing A LITTLE PRINCESS which has a workshop with National Youth Music Theatre in Summer 2017. Carl’s other music theatre work includes book and lyrics for YARICO (London Workshop Theatre 2015), music by James McConnel, lyrics also by Paul Leigh; libretti for PRECIPITATION (Tête-à-Tête 2014) and WHITE SUIT (Greenwich and Docklands International Festival and touring 2013), composed by Helen Chadwick; NIGHT DANCE (Guildhall School of Music and Drama), composed by Michael Taplin; and the play BUTCHER with songs from the career of Fred Barnes. His other plays include OSTRICH BOYS (Belgrade Theatre Coventry and National Theatre Company of Korea 2016), EMIL AND THE DETECTIVES (National Theatre 2013) and RED FORTRESS (Unicorn 2012). Carl is a member of MMD’s Lab and was a member of BML. He has been Artistic Director of the Royal Court Young People’s Theatre and an Associate Director of Birmingham Rep and Unicorn. |
