Name | Darren Clark |
Biography | I principally work as a composer and lyricist in the theatre in London. My first full length show was for Putney Theatre Company, a twisted gypsy show called The Tales of Petrushka. Putney theatre company also provided me with the opportunity to write my first full scale musical together with writer/director Charlotte Ive, The Magic Stone of Saturnalia was produced in 2008 and was a hugely valuable learning experience for me as a composer and lyricist. I then began working with a collective of artists interested in creating theatre for young people which eventually became Paper Balloon Theatre Company, with whom I have now worked on several shows including Night Light at the Camden Fringe, a UK tour of The Grumpiest Boy in the World by Finegan Kruckemeyer and most recently collaborated with them on a new show Once Upon a Snowflake with the Moscow Puppet Theatre. I have worked with director Amy Draper on several projects that are in various stages of development. Most recently we have collaborated on Duck Duck Goose at London’s Southwark Playhouse Theatre and in Spring 2015, after several Research and Development weeks, Theatre Bench produced These Trees Are Made of Blood at Southwark Playhouse which enjoyed a sell-out run and critical and public acclaim. My work has been broadcast on the BBC and heard in all sorts of venues such as The Garrick Theatre in London’s West End, the Camden Roundhouse, the V & A Museum, The Royal National Theatre, The Royal College of Music and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival amongst many others. I have had the pleasure of commissions from Scamp Theatre, Scenic Route Theatre, How It Ended Productions, Icon Theatre Company and The Gramophones Theatre Company amongst others. My song The Angel at the Top of the Tree was the winner of the Iris Theatre Xmas Factor Panel Award for Best New Song 2014. I was runner-up in the 2015 Stiles & Drewe Song of The Year at the Garrick Theatre and I am currently a member of the advanced BML Composer & Lyricist Workshop. My songs have also been selected for the Lehman Engel Masterclass Workshops. I am currently working on three new pieces of Musical Theatre with writers Rhys Jennings, Linda Walton and Mary Evans. In 2016 my collaborator, Rhys Jennings, and I won the Musical Theatre International Stiles & Drewe Mentorship Award for our musical The Wicker Husband which is currently in development. As a performer, musician and singer I have toured nationally with Theatre Hullaballoo and Action Transport Theatre as the narrator for their opera My Mother Told Me Not To Stare and I performed in Wanderlust at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014 with The Gramophones Theatre Company. Above all I enjoy storytelling through music and theatre and I am always happy to hear from potential collaborators. |
