David James


David James began as a costume designer in New York and Los Angeles, working on productions directly with Bock & Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett, Michael Kidd, Onna White, Alvin Ailey, Jose Quintaro and John Guare. He also worked as a Stylist, dressing over 500 TV and print campaigns, and sat on the board of United Scenic Artists local 829, voted for the Tony Awards and the CLIO Awards. His plays have won numerous awards in the States, and he has had radio plays produced by BBC World Services, Radio 4, and the South African Broadcasting Company. He was chair of the theatre committee for the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain for 11 years, as well as sitting on the executive board.
He was a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York for seven years, where he developed the libretto for a full-length ballet version of Mark Twain’s ‘€˜Tom Sawyer’ (score by Maury Yeston) and later created the libretto for a full-length ballet version of The Good Person of Setzuan (score by Michael Kamen).
In 2010, he founded ‘BOOK Music & Lyrics’, a professional development programme for emerging musical theatre practitioners (composers, lyricists, librettists, choreographers and directors). A registered charity, it won an award for the encouragement of new writing from the WGGB (www.bookmusicandlyrics.co) in 2012.
His current projects include ‘Bandemonium’, a jukebox musical commissioned by Josef Weinberger, and ‘Mountain Medicine’, a 60 minute drama series in development with Kowalski Media/ Tricon. He also performs new burlesque, including for Ducky at the RVT and with Naked Boys Reading.
