David Merriman is a London-based composer & lyricist, musical-director, accompanist and répétiteur. Originally from Swansea, David studied at St Catherine’s College, Oxford (BA Music, 2010) and at the University of Bristol (MA Music: Composition, 2013). In addition to his freelance work, he is presently engaged as a visiting lecturer in Music Theatre at the Royal Central School Of Speech And Drama and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
David’s most recent work – a musical-theatre adaptation of Ilf and Petrov’s The Twelve Chairs – was commissioned by RCSSD and produced at the Embassy Theatre in 2018. He has been previously commissioned by RCSSD to provide music and lyrics for a new musical adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, in collaboration with bookwriter Helen Watts, and provided the score and arrangements for award-winning cabaret artist Le Gateau Chocolat’s Duckie. He is an alumnus of YMT:UK’s first Young Writers And Composers course, and his music-drama Strange Exiles was performed at the Cockpit Theatre in early 2014 as part of Second Movement’s rough for opera initiative.
As an MD, his credits include many varieties of musical theatre, from the core repertory to original and/or in-development works. He has accompanied on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Scotland, serves as regular accompanist for Navadina Choir and Vacani School Of Dance, and maintains a practice as a private repertoire coach in South London.
