Jake Brunger

Biography

Jake Brunger is a London-based playwright and musical theatre writer originally from Nottingham.

With his regular collaborator composer Pippa Cleary, he is the writer of JET SET GO! (Edinburgh Fringe, Theatre 503, Jermyn Street Theatre), THE GREAT BRITISH SOAP OPERA (Edinburgh Fringe, Jermyn Street Theatre), RED RIDING HOOD (Singapore Repertory Theatre, with numerous licensed productions worldwide), THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4 (Leicester Curve), PRODIGY (National Youth Theatre / St James Theatre), TREASURE ISLAND (Singapore Repertory Theatre) and – upcoming – CHICKEN LITTLE (Singapore Repertory Theatre).

Additional credits together include a song for A SONG CYCLE FOR SOHO (Soho Theatre; cast recording produced by SimG Records), lyrics for THE SNOW GORILLA (Rose Theatre Kingston) and the opening number to 2015 WEST END BARES (Cafe de Paris).

Award nominations: 2016 UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and the Young for THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE, 2016 Singapore Life Award for Best Show for the Young for TREASURE ISLAND.

Licensing includes: JET SET GO! and PRODIGY (upcoming; Spring 2017) for Josef Weinberger Ltd and RED RIDING HOOD for Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals, which has had productions so far in Mexico (in a Spanish language translation), Bahrain, Doha, Edinburgh, London and – upcoming in 2017 – Texas, USA, and a Mandarin translation in Singapore (which opens in July 2017).

Recordings include: PRODIGY (Auburn Jam Records; available on Amazon Music, Apple Music and Spotify, with the cast recording available from Auburn Jam’s website), A SONG CYCLE FOR SOHO (SimG Records).

In addition to his musical theatre work, Jake is the writer of the stage play FOUR PLAY, which premiered at the Old Vic New Voices Festival starring Richard Madden and Jeremy Irvine. FOUR PLAY was subsequently produced at Theatre 503 and is published and licensed by Nick Hern Books.

Jake is currently writing a pilot for BBC TV Drama as part of the 2016 BBC TV Drama Writers’ Programme, and developing an original series with Warner Brothers’ TV company Wall to Wall. He has two feature films in development; LOVE SARAH for Miraj Films (which is currently scheduled to shoot in June 2017) and WIDOWED for producers Jack Fishburn and Muireann Price.

Other work includes SAM’S GAME (Lakeside Arts Centre), PUB QUIZ (Manchester Royal Exchange Studio, which he also directed), PEOPLE LIKS US (Vineyard Theatre, New York / Pleasance Theatre), ‘AVE IT (Old Vic Tunnels), CHAVS (Lyric Hammersmith Studio) and BRAVE NEW WORLDS (Nabokov Theatre / Soho Theatre).

Jake read Drama at Bristol University, trained on the Royal Court Theatre’s ‘Supergroup’ and is represented by Harriet Pennington Legh at Troika.
