Biography

KATE MARLAIS

Kate studied a BMus in Music with a Composition major at King’s College London, under tuition of Robert Keeley and Silvina Milstein, then training in musical theatre at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was recently made Associate (ARAM) for her work in music.
Kate was the 2018-19 Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer at Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. She was recently composer for ABANDON (Lyric), for which she was nominated for a Best Composer Stage Debut Award. The Lyric, with Mercury Musical Developments & Musical Theatre Network, funded & supported development of her sole-created (book, music & lyrics, and co-music producer) physical theatre/musical theatre project I CANNOT MAKE NOISE WHEN I SCREAM earlier this year.

FOR YOU I LONG THE LONGEST (Luke Brown Dance, UK tour), TESCO 100 YEARS (Birmingham NEC; Arranger & Musical Co-Director), WEST END FRIENDS charity Christmas single ‘YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND’ (Musical Arranger, Co-Orchestrator & Musical Director), HEAR HER SONG (for The Canales Project, UN Decade of Women & The Malala Fund – performed internationally incl. at Sidney Harman Hall, Washington D.C.) and RARE BIRDS (Soho Theatre).

Kate was Musical Producer for Stage (also Assoc. Musical Director & Vocal/Musical Arrangements) for musical LEAVE TO REMAIN (Lyric), with music by Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke. She was Musical Supervisor on Frantic Assembly’s FATHERLAND (Lyric Hammersmith, and Manchester Royal Exchange, for MIF and LIFT festival; created by Scott Graham, Simon Stephens, with music by Karl Hyde of Underworld and Music Producer Matthew Herbert).
Kate often works with Frantic Assembly as a Vocal Director, and on their Ignition youth programme, and will be working on their National Theatre River Stage platform this summer.

As Co-Writer/Co-Composer with Alex Young, she won the S & S Award for their musical HERE, in conjunction with Curve, Leicester and Mercury Musical Developments, as judged by Nikolai Foster (Curve), Nica Burns (Nimax) and Kent Nicholson (Playwright’s Horizons, NY). This year, they were finalists in Wild Plum Art’s COMPOSIUM, a classical song competition in association with PRS for Music and Cheltenham Music Festival. Their new musical F**KED IN MARRAKECH was presented last year at BEAM festival, Theatre Royal Stratford East and is currently being workshopped at ArtsEd.

As a performer, Kate’s credits include WAR HORSE (West End) andTHE HUMAN COMEDY (Young Vic).

Kate is also currently setting up MODULATE, an initiative for female composers for stage, supporting the move towards 50:50 gender balance in the industry.
