AJ Layague has music degrees from Stanford University, CalArts, UC San Diego, and studied with John Sparks at the Academy for New Musical Theatre. She was composer-in-residence for eight productions at Occidental College where she had a postdoctoral fellowship in music, theater, and Asian Studies. Her works have been performed in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. at NYU Tisch, Montalvo Arts, Volksbühne Berlin, and Agosto Foundation in Prague, among others, and she was a 2021 semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neil National Music Theater Conference. She has published and presented on race and theater casting, Chinese film music, and Asian-American hip hop, was a guest lecturer at Simon Fraser University, USC, National Taiwan University, and Freie Universität Berlin, and has given musical writing workshops for BFA and MFA students at multiple institutions including UC Irvine, CalArts, and Cornish College of the Arts. Currently she teaches and develops curriculum in music, theater, and creativity for Oregon State University.
