Name | Sarah Grochala |
Biography | I’m an Anglo-Polish playwright based in London working in theatre, audio and digital. My work centres around strong female characters and is both political and poetic in style. My plays include ‘S-27’ (Finborough Theatre, 2009; Griffin Theatre, Sydney 2010) which won the 2007 iceandfire/Amnesty International Protect the Human Playwriting Competition. During December 2020 and January 2021, the Finborough streamed an archive video of S-27 as part of #FinboroughForFree. S-27 is published by Oberon.
In 2011, I won OffWestEnd.com’s Adopt a Playwright Award. My play ‘Waiting for Romeo’ ran in rep at Tiyatro Yan Etki, Istanbul from 2014 to 2016, winning the 2015 Ekin Yazin Dostları Theatre Award for Best Play (Small Venue). My most recent play ‘Star Fish’ was shortlisted for the 2016 Nick Darke Award and BBC Script Room 10.
Alongside my playwriting, I regularly write Dr Who/The Avengers audio dramas for Big Finish productions. My recent commissions include ‘Narcissus’ (2019), ‘Do No Harm’ (2020), ‘The Hollow Crown’ (2021), ‘Mother’s Day’ (2021), ‘Off Grid’ (2021) and ‘Walkabout’ (2021).
Between 2012-16, I was an associate artist with Headlong exploring the possibilities of digital theatre. I curated and contributed creatively to four pieces of work including: ‘Digital Double’ (2013); ‘Prism’ (2014); ‘The Nether Realm’ (2014 – all with the visual artist Michael Takeo Magruder); and ‘What’s She Like’ (2016 – with Coney).
In theatre, I am currently working on a commission for a musical about female pirates with Vicky Graham Productions. I am also working on a commission for a play about Russian spies as part of the Sphinx 30 programme and on a play about women and technology with the Orchard Project (USA). |
