Biography | Spencer is a queer musical theatre educator, composer and playwright. He currently is the Arts Department Chair at York School in Monterey, CA. He is the Director of Vocal Music and Musical Theatre Director. His last position was Director of Arts at the prestigious Fessenden School, a PK-9 private boarding boys school in the Boston area where he was integral to the building, design and completion of the 12-million dollar Performing Arts Center. Previously he taught for seven years at Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills, CA where he was the Performing Arts Director.Spencer focuses his teaching and work to include untold stories of underrepresented voices in the musical theatre canon. He is the founder of the diverse educational platform and curriculum, BROADWAY REFOCUSED, and is the host of two new podcasts: Broadway ReFocused and Musicals With Impact.In educational theatre, he has premiered Duncan Sheik’s “Whisper House”; “An Evening With Stuart Brayson”; “The Stories of Tonight” and directed/produced over 30 musicals including “Chicago”, “Les Miserables”, “The Wedding Singer”, “Shrek” and more. He has directed choirs at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican; Paris, France; Cadogan Hall in London, England; Canterbury Cathedral, and the 2011 London International Choral Festival.Writer/Composer: FOR TONIGHT – Professional Production: February 2019 at Queensbury Theatre, Houston, Texas. Other productions: 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival, Goodspeed Musicals’ New Works Festival, and Isle of Man’s Theatrefest ’15 (UK Premiere). “One Step” – Top 12 finalist in the ‘Drewe & Stiles 2015 Best Song Award’ and performed in the West End (Garrick Theatre).He also worked at San Jose Stage Company as resident Musical Director and Education Director for six years, where he founded the Bay Area High School Top Honor Awards, where he chaperoned students in the national program: The Jimmy Awards in New York City. Spencer has performed internationally at WORLD EXPO in Tokyo, Japan, CHILDREN’S FOLKLORE FESTIVAL in Matha, France, on national television on THE GONG SHOW, and been featured on TLC’S TRADING SPACES.
