Teresa Howard

Biography

Teresa trained in acting, mime and devised physical theatre and writes for stage and TV. She has recently returned from TRAVERS, a cross-art residency in Aarhus, Denmark working with international practitioners in opera, film, music and theatre collaborating on a music theatre libretto for the film SLIDERS(Dokk1). She is currently working on a play for children based on THE SNOW QUEEN, book and lyrics for a musical adaptation of THE WIND SINGER, and a further production of her musical I CAPTURE THE CASTLE is being developed.
THE WIND SINGER is Teresa’s adaptation of William Nicholson’s award-winning young adult fantasy novel with music and soundscapes by Sarah Llewellyn and a children’s choir. They had a summer residency and developmental workshop at the Royal Shakespeare Company culminating in a performance in January 2019 (Director Lotte Wakeham and MD Bruce O’Neil RSC Head of Music). This followed a BEAM2018 showcase at the Theatre Royal Stratford East (directed by Cressida Carré, MD Catherine Jayes), and a Masterclass with Claude-Michel Schönberg.
Teresa is the book and lyric writer of new British musical I CAPTURE THE CASTLE, based on the classic novel by Dodie Smith, with music by Steven Edis. It received its world premiere in April 2017 at Watford Palace Theatre and toured to the Octagon Theatre, Bolton and Oxford Playhouse. Previous workshop performances of I CAPTURE THE CASTLE include a Royal National Theatre/Watford Palace Theatre collaboration at the NT Studio, The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (directed by Brigid Larmour) and the Royal Academy of Music (directed by Karen Rabinowitz). Excerpts from the show were performed at the MMD Richard Stilgoe Masterclass.
Teresa also wrote the book and lyrics for POSSESSED, a Pre-Raphaelite musical based on the love affair between Jane Burden and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, with music by Steven Edis. This was developed at the National Theatre and showcased at the Arts Theatre London and Oxford Playhouse, with master-classes with Claude-Michel Schönberg, and received a premiere production at Camden People’s Theatre, London in 2016.
Steven and Teresa’s songs have been sung as part of festivals and cabaret performances including: April 2019 Women Songwriters ATA Cabaret Concert at the Arts Theatre, London, a showcase of international new musical songs at the Kings Head Theatre, The Other Palace, Josie Lawrence’s TRYING IT ON cabaret at the Menier Chocolate Factory, and the Clearspace Festival of new musical songs in the USA.
Teresa’s stage plays include: GROCK (Chichester Festival Theatre, and Liverpool Lunchtime Theatre); STONEFIST (Soho Theatre); BADER AND DOOLITTLE (Commissioned by JABOD); REV LUKE’S USEFUL SHOW (as actor and dramaturg, The Old Fire Station, Oxford) and MUSIC ON THE METRO (Winchester). Teresa also created and wrote PROTECTORS, a TV series commissioned by Talisman Films, and was a researcher on PAINE(a film about the life of Thomas Paine) for Red Door TV. Her children’s audio book, THE LONELY MONSTER, with songs by Olivia Caldwell, was produced by HD Productions.
Teresa  received a prestigious Peggy Ramsay Foundation grant for writing THE WIND SINGER.
She has also had Fellowships as Resident Writer at Winchester School of Art and the Hosking Houses Trust, taught play writing at the Holborn Centre for Performing Arts, lectured on writing at University College Oxford, and been a critic and presenter for BBC World Service. She has also lead theatre workshops with young people at regional theatres across the country.
Teresa is a maker of devised TINY SHOWS with the Copenhagen Interpretation and Women Who Write Musicals and writes articles for magazines and journals including The Spectator and Blackwell’s, The Art Book.
She is on the Board of Mercury Musical Developments  and runs  MMD Writers Lab I
