William J Dunleavy
William Dunleavy is a writer, actor and theatre-maker working in Dublin and London. He is currently a member of the Bush Theatre’s Playwright’s Group and Big Ambitions, a new play development initiative by the Olivier Award-winning Fishamble: The New Play Company. His monologue play, Narcissus, was presented by Druid Theatre at Galway International Arts Festival 2019 as a Druid Debut. It was also awarded the Gerry Sinnott LGBT Ally Bursary at Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival 2020. A TV pilot of Narcissus was shortlisted for the BBC Writers Academy and Writersroom. His work has been supported by an Arts Council of Ireland Professional Development Award, Theatre Bursary and a Covid-19 Response Award.
His musical theatre work with composer Benedict Esdale includes Passions: A New Song Cycle (Bewley’s Café Theatre) and Dangerous Liaisons (Smock Alley: Scene + Heard). The development of Dangerous Liaisons has subsequently been supported by a DLR Emerging Artists Grant. Dangerous Liaisons: The Concept Album was released in August on all major streaming platforms. Dangerous Liaisons will receive a work in progress showing at the Turbine Theatre in 2021.
He is also a founding member of the experimental theatre collective tasteinyourmouth. Their inaugural production, b(l)oom, which was written by William, was seen at The New Theatre, Dublin, in January 2020. Their site-specific piece, After Your Ass, was developed at SHOW 2018 at the Triskell Arts Centre with CORCADORCA and will be further developed in 2021 with the support of an Arts Council of Ireland Project Award. Their upcoming work includes You’re Needy (Sounds Frustrating), which was given a work in progress showing as part of SHOW 2020 and has been developed with the support of Dunamaise Theatre as part of their Open Stages Residency 2020 and Kilkenny Arts Festival. Their play Aitchoo was awarded a Larry Kramer Bursary by Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival 2020. They are Fringe Lab Artists 2020.
