John Sparks has kindly agreed to hold a free book-writing masterclass for a limited number of MMD members.

The lecture examines dialogue samples from existing plays and their musical adaptations to introduce some of the short and long-term factors that affect a given character’s diction in the moment as well as other practical factors including plot, spontaneity, leading to and away from songs and the need for brevity. The talk will conclude with some quick writing exercises and Q&A.

John was the founder/co-Director of the Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, Inc. (1979-2002) and has been the Founding Director of ANMT/NMI from 2002 to the present. He founded the Writers’ Workshop at Theatre Building Chicago in 1987 and also served TBC as Artistic Director from 1999 through 2009. John has mentored the work of over 250 musical theatre writers.
